Thursday Team – Plan for 26/10/2023

Last week, we didn’t quite finish off at Furness Park FP-11 – so didn’t get a chance to visit FP-14 for a bit of TLC around the community working bee plantings.

Greenlink has donated a box of excess stock Carex (sedges) which were struggling somewhat. I’ve revived them – but they do need planting out ASAP.  I was thinking they might go well below the stormwater drains and streamlines within FP-14 – fairly bare there at the moment – and more likely to get water as we move into drier times.

Julie and Peter have generously agreed to provide hoses for water as they did for the community working bee plantings.

So – I thought we’d reverse the order of things this week – start in FP-14 and finish in FP-11. Approx after morning tea, we’ll return to last week’s site FP-11 and finish off the weeding there. That’ll enable us to get the digging done early when it’s cooler. We shouldn’t need to move camp completely – just mosey over with our weed buckets and preferred weeding tools.

Conditions (Last updated 06:30 26/10)

Rain: There’s a 20% chance of rain until 11:00, 5% afterwards while we are working.
Storms/Weather warnings: Nothing that affects us.
Wind: medium strength SSW winds while we work.
Temperature: It should be a cool 9-12 degrees while we work but could feel colder due the south-south-westerlies. Ideal hole-digging weather!
UV: The sky should be partly cloudy – but the UV potentially ranging up to a possible >6 means we need our sun protection.
EPA Air Quality: Good.

Risks to highlight

  • Please bring water to maintain your hydration.
  • Mozzies are about in shaded spots and still-ish air – best to have bare skin protected. We have repellent available.
  • Wear appropriate clothes for the conditions – including a hat, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes.
  • Hi-vis clothes/vests are recommended especially near the east-west track. In FP-11, Cyclists occasionally tackle the steep and curved path and could lose control. Please take care when on the path to dump weeds etc.
  • There are stumps, branches, lumps etc that may present trip hazards and eye-hazards under twiggy shrubs etc. We have some safety glasses in the PPE bag if you feel you need them.
  • COVID, flu and RSV are still around. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms.
  • No recent bull-ant incidents in the work sites – however, please be vigilant….

Work Times

We work from 08:30-11:30 but shorter contributions are most welcome. We usually break for morning tea at about 10:00. Note that morning tea is self-catered, ie BYO. However, some team members might contribute home-cooked delicacies from time to time…

Parking

There should be parking nearby at the end of Furness or Gardenia Streets. Note that you might have to move your car if you park on Heath Street.

Notification

Please let us know if you are planning to come. This helps us organise our supplies and ensures you will be notified of cancellation or other changes eg due to an extreme weather event.

Apologies

Nic, Peter, Nicky.
