Scientific Bird Surveys in the Park

A group conducts monthly surveys in our park on a more scientific basis than our family-friendly Spring and Autumn surveys. These are run by experienced bird watchers and attended by a variety of “birdos” including some excellent photographers. The aim is to provide meaningful, monthly, bird survey reports to Birdlife Australia’s Birdata data collection platform as well as interesting information for the community.

These monthly surveys are conducted independently of our Committee. Nevertheless, we are very grateful that the group shares its results with us.

Sighting lists are published on our Noticeboard and on this page to inform the community. They include observations of what birds are present, their numbers and other aspects such as bird feeding, drinking and nesting activities – correlated with weather, water conditions and environment changes. All this will inform maintenance planning and practices to conserve and improve the biodiversity of the Blackburn Creeklands.

These events are conducted independently of our Committee. Please let us know if you are interested and we’ll pass on your details to the organisers.

Survey Protocol

The survey protocol covers the survey methodology and routes in detail.

There are two survey routes – both commencing at the Kalang Oval Pavilion. One heads east via Kalang Park on the southern side of the creek, through to Furness Park and then returns on the northern side of the creek to Pakenham Street. The other heads west to Blacks Walk on the northern side of the creek and returns to the Pavilion from the southern side of the creek in Blacks Walk.
